Movements

longcase clock movementsAll the movements are from the renowned Black Forest region of Germany and apart from the Granddaughter, are eight day, triple chime - Westminster - St.Michael - Whittington, with an automatic night silence switching off the clock from 10pm to 7am. The clocks chime each quarter, half hour, three quarters and on the hour.

The clocks are either wound by means of pulling the chains to raise the weights up towards the top of the clock (chain driven) or by winding a key to raise the weights (cable driven). These will work downwards over an eight day period, although in some of the smaller clocks due to the height of the case the clock will have to be wound up every 4 or 5 days. The weights are decorative as well as functional and we recommend that the clock be wound every 5 or 6 days so that the weights can be seen through the glass door as well as the pendulum, as this enhances the beauty of the clock.

The Granddaughter is a single Westminster chime movement, and there are only two weights which are hung on a cable and run the clock. The chimes on both the quarter and the hours are spring driven, wound with the same key that winds up the weights.
